There was one of those news feed things on my computer that told me so.
The new thing, the current thing, the more popular thing is...
...
Cake balls.
And cake balls on a stick.
...
Really.
I just don't see the allure.
Smooshing cake up into a ball with fattening stuff and then dipping them in chocolate and/or frosting.
OK.
I do see the allure.
A little bit.
But somehow going to the "Cake Ball Cafe" does not have the same appeal as the "Cupcake Cafe".
Am I right?
And...
Then there is the side of me that is still 10 years old and wants to giggle at the whole idea of cake having ...ummmm... well... you know.
Cupcakes have such a cozy, innocent feeling.
Cake Balls...ummm... not so much!
Why can't people just leave stuff alone? Soon society will start ridiculing cupcake eaters. They will taunt us with sayings like, "You're a loser. You don't have any (cake) balls."
Am I right?
Sadly, I think I am.
So I have decided to stay in 2010.
Sure, it was a lousy year...sickness, pestilence, plague, persecution, poverty... (sorry, I got stuck in P-alliteration and couldn't stop!)
...but at least I had the comfort of cupcakes.
Now. A year with only cake balls to sustain me sounds like a grim and dreary obstacle.
Insurmountable, really.
You will be getting a spam .... ummm.... I mean e-mail petition from me soon regarding stopping this insidious undermining of one of the great comfort foods of all times.
Please, sign it and forward it to your Congressman. Or Senator. Or one of those people that can outlaw Cake Balls in your state.
Until I know cupcakes are safe, though, I'm digging my heels in and not starting 2011.
Feel free to join me if you wish.
Sigh.
Cupcakes rule! We have several cupcake bakeries in our area - some how "Hey Cake Balls" doesn't have quite the same appeal as "Hey Cupcake" does it? And I must have your ten year old twin stuck inside of me, I turn into a mass of hopeless giggles every time I hear that phrase. I'll sign your petition, send it on! Kat
ReplyDeleteI too read about those cake balls and I thought what a nightmare, I won't be making those!
ReplyDeleteSorry, Jenny, I am just not a food fashionista!
ReplyDeleteI'm still stuck back in the days of a large slice of cake and then maybe seconds as well!!!!!!
Have a wonderful 2011 when you decide to get there xx ~ J
I saw this also and I decided just as you...I will stay in 2010....what in the world could be any better than a cupcake...although my best friend has been make something like these cake balls...she calls them sweet spots and they are so yummy!!!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great one!!! We will have cupcakes together!!!
They invaded playgroup last year and seem to be here to stay. A toddler mom can pop a cake ball and chase a two year old at the same time. A cupcake is too big to inhale in just one bite.
ReplyDeleteI think it should be the year of the petit fours. Cake balls have no class.
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny!
ReplyDeleteI for one have yet to try a cake ball. They always look delicious though. My problem is that while a cupcake is a single satisfying snack, I guarantee that I would feel entitled to pop multiple cake balls into the mouth. I'm sure of it.
I heard on the news last weekend that cupcakes were 'in'. I think it's funny how global these have gone. What used to be an easy way to feed kids at a birthday party with less trouble is now 'cool'. They were so boring then. I love the blogs and how cute people are doing them now. People are so clever.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm a little short on discernment 'cause I'm willing to eat cake shaped like a ball, a cup, or most any other shape.
ReplyDeleteMy husband actually bought me a cake balls cookbook for my birthday. It went back. My biggest beef with it was so much work for a tiny treat that would disappear in one bite.
ReplyDeleteBut now that you mention the name, it IS an unfortunate title, to be sure. As if a delightfully decorated manly cake has lost appendages and we must now consume them. Just doesn't quite entice the palate as the mention of a cupcake does. Cupcakes seem more like an adorable little swirly topped offspring of the parent cake. Love me some cupcakes.
The new PC name for Cake Balls are cake truffles. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteOh No! Our first disagreement!!!
ReplyDeleteJenny I LOVE cake balls!!!! So moist, so sweet, so D-LISH-US, LOL
I can honestly say I will never try to make them, but if I go somewhere and cake balls are there, you can bet I will be sampling them, heheehee!
It's so much easier to justify too...ok just 1 little cake ball, just 2 little cake balls, surely can't be bad for me, right?
Love ya!
Gina
My Sister makes cake balls and I am not a fan, so I will be sticking with cupcakes too:) Have a blessed day, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteOH LORD, have mercy!! Cake balls are the shizzzz! I make them ALL the time!! I even have a nephew who will do ANYTHING for a batch! I mean ANYTHING! He would dig up the yard and fix a septic tank for a batch!!! Cupcakes and cakes were my bread and butter for a while....I will always love them...but cake balls....are a lil bit of heaven (on a stick)!
ReplyDeleteJust the name is enough to turn me off...cake balls...ummm enough said. Cupcakes rule!
ReplyDeletecakeballs??? I'm just going to pretend I never even hear that!
ReplyDeleteIt's still "relax and have a cupcake" :)
Be at peace my dear frantic sister, I have a pan of chocolate cupcakes with fudge icin' safely frozen in my freezer. Ya can pull one out and nuke it for a bit an OOOoooo baby!!!
ReplyDeleteKeepin' all the goodies frozen keeps my little fingers off of 'em!
God bless ya and have a marvelous day sweetie!!!
I must say that I think the cakeballs are pretty cute... but WAY WAY TOO MUCH WORK! I'll stick with you on the cupcakes. Where do I sign?! ;)
ReplyDeleteI just can't see the allure of cake that someone has mushed about by hand and then rolled in icing. I don't think I have to worry up here, though, because by the time the government has come up with the French for Cake Balls so that all packaging and advertising can be done in two official languages the fad will be long over!
ReplyDelete(I'm a big-slice-of-cake gal, myself)
I love a woman who takes a strong stand on controversial issues such as this!
ReplyDeleteCake Balls freak me out....
cake balls ... while i do have friends who have crossed over to the dark side and made some pretty darn cute cake balls, they wont be making an appearance at my house ... the name alone keeps me from wanting them ...
ReplyDeleteCUPCAKES RULE!
ReplyDeleteI made your cupcakes in-a-jar for New Year's Eve and my family loved them. My son's girlfriend says they are her new favorite dessert.
Consider me on your team. (But if I'd had the cake balls, I might have joined the other side...)
ReplyDelete;)
Oh, how I hate trends!
ReplyDeleteCupcakes were to me as a child the best thing in the world, and they aren't too bad as an adult, either. I'm not to wild about cupcakes replacing wedding cake, but that's up to the bride, I guess. But cake balls? Cake balls? They are the Emperor's clothes!
XO,
Sheila... who's not saying she wouldn't eat one, only that they are kind of ugly!
"too" wild. Sigh. I hate typos!
ReplyDeleteoh balls!!! Not something new.
ReplyDeleteI am also staying in 2010!
I've been wanting to make cake balls for a while, I can't lie. But when push comes to shove, it's all about cupcakes. Why? Because cupcakes are merely a mode of transporation for frosting. The more frosting, the more I like your cupcake. Sure, the cake itself should be delicious, but extra frosting covers most sins. Cake balls have no frosting, so they lose in my book.
ReplyDeleteWell, the name would not draw me to them at all, couldn't they call them something that sounds more appetizing than cake ball? I vote for cupcakes. Hugs
ReplyDeleteBlew my new years resolution, just had cheese cake for my lunch.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the Post on Houston, facts people don't know that live there. I am in Maine and am staying here. They keep it the same.
LOL! I may be the only cake ball advocate here! Not that I make them or eat them but I do love the cute little shapes they can be made to look like. The yellow chicks are a favorite and the owls are cute.
ReplyDeletethey rank right up there with moth balls.....
ReplyDeletei'm all for cupcakes :)
everyone has to try a new trend..like sayings and one that really bothers me is "my bad" it must have come from the makers of cake balls..don't you think? ! ;)
ReplyDeleteYUM!! I pretty much love anything sweet... Wishing you a sweet and tasty 2011! Hugs, Silke
ReplyDeleteSince I'm hypoglycemic and can't eat sweets, I don't much care about this great controversy. But for the sake of friendship, which I do care very much about, I'd be glad to sign your petition and help your cause. I'm nice like that. And you may have all my cupcakes. And cake balls...
ReplyDeletei. hate. cupcakes.
ReplyDeleteThere I said it. Can we still be friends?
I have never liked cupcakes, nor am I a cake fan. I like pie. I eat pie for my birthday. Cake is yucky and cupcakes are doubly yucky.
I can't wait until pies take over the market. Next year possibly? Cupcake, cakeballs, next year pie!
I'm going to have a poppyseed cupcake right now....you reminded me of them being in the freezer, Jenny. Thanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteWe have a friend who started a business making these orbs of death. A couple of months ago she gave us a bunch of samples. She wanted our feedback. They were all awesome!
ReplyDeletejeez why do they have to put everything on a stick...what happened to old fashioned deserts...a pie..a slice of cake..a cobbler...or a cookie...now everything is on a stick....hold your ground Jenny....I'm behind you...
ReplyDeleteI just can't get used to these. Even the name sounds kinda, well, you know....I can't even type the word b*lls..*giggle*
ReplyDeleteCupcakes will always rule in my book!!
Love,
LuLu~*xoxo
Actually, cupcakes are so 2009. Shakes were supposed to replace cupcakes, then those cake balls came along.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally with you! I love me a good cupcake! Yum!
Cake balls are for sissies. I am not a sissy. I am not going to try and hide my fat in a small goey ball of goodness. Nope. Give me a big, crumby, decorate how you want cupcake.
ReplyDeleteGive me liberty or give me cupcakes.
Count me in sistah!
Oh you are too hilarious! When I saw the title of your post on my RSS feed, I thought that you must've lost your mind because cupcakes rule! Good thing it's not you who lost your mind but all those cakeball lovers.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I admit, I did make those cakeball-on-a-stick once because I saw it on Bakerella's website and thought they looked cute. However, it was too much work for me and they ended up looking nothing like the ones on her website. They did taste really good though.
Still, I am very much a cupcake girl at heart. Both my husband and I will join you in 2010 if it means keeping our cupcake love alive :)
Whatever happened to pie?? LOL My brother-in-law makes these cake balls that he calls "diabetes drops" because its cake blended with frosting, then covered in an outer crust of more frosting, the rolled in sprinkles. Talk about a sugar high...
ReplyDeleteCake balls sounds a bit like moth balls, don't you think?! rather inedible.
ReplyDeleteOh, but they do look so goood!
Well....
ReplyDeletelast year a cousin and I tried making these for her daughter's B-day. Ummm, they came out ok, edible and still on the sticks as the kids ate cupcakes! Nuff said :)
Well, I seem to be late to the cake ball. I think rolling already baked cake into balls sounds kind of unsanitary. Just one more unecessary step in the whole baking process. Well these lips won't be wrapped around any uh er orbs. I just want you to know, when the cake ball fight commences, I'll be standing right behind you the whole way!~Ames
