Poppies will put them to sleep...or make them drunk...

So...

The poppies are blooming in my garden.

Profusely.

And a few days ago I ran inside and told Mr. Jenny he had to come and see the bees.

I told him how they would fly up to the flower really slowly and circle it...

...and then they would dive into the center of the flower and after awhile roll around until their little bodies would be coated totally yellow with the pollen. After they looked like little yellow pollen balls, they would fly off slowly, bobbing and weaving and intoxicated by pollen! It was so cool.

Yeah.

He didn't believe me.

I guess he thinks I get all dramatic about stuff or something.

Geez.

As if!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But...

The next day he went out there with the camera and he captured the bees UP TO the rolling around and drunk with pollen part!

"There were bees flying all around my head out there," he told me later after I downloaded the pictures to find he had only captured half of the drunken bee/pollen orgy thing.

"D'oh," I replied, "You mean a big, strong guy like you was afraid of a teensy, weensy pollen drunk bee?"

I think he was annoyed.

I think I caught him googling 'surviving marriage with an overly dramatic and sarcastic wife', but I'm not totally sure about that.

However.

In the interest of showing you some cool pictures, I'm gonna share what he captured.

Cool, right?

What's that you say?

Why didn't I take the pictures?

Are you crazy!

There's all kinds of bees out there!

Sigh...

  3. Very cool pics!! Love the post, you seem to have a very lively garden area, between the bees and the killer hummingbirds....can't wait to see what else lurks in the shadows.

  4. It's best to stay clear of those vicious pollen drunk bees visiting your lovely poppies, sweet peas and delphiniums(?), Jenny! They will be back., so watch your step!

  5. I absolutely love poppies; they remind me of my late father because he used to comment on how beautiful they looked growing wild in the fields.

My husband photographed bees last year and I was NOT going to watch, LOL.

  7. Cool! Pretty flowers. Your garden must be lovely!
I use my height to my advantage sometimes. I always have the hubby come and get rid of the wasps nest or mud daubers nest because I can't reach them. He usually gets stung doing this. Good thing I can't reach them huh? Heh heh heh~Ames

  11. This is SO COOL!
Reminds me of a post I had a while back where I heard a Loon; husband said I was crazy-like. So, he goes out back by the pond; Voilla' hears the loon, unable to get her in a photo, but did have to say those lovely words
"you were right" !! Ahh, what a memory :)
    Your poppies are georgeous!!

  18. I'm shocked to walk in on explicit descriptions of Bee Porn….not just any Bee Porn but drug fuelled Bee Porn. You should be ashamed of yourself grooming the poor little bees using opium flowers and then using hubby to pimp them to the outside world…..did you get them to sign a standard release form I bet not…..No wonder honey production is down…

  19. Pollen drunk bees appear to be harmless BUT I think you were very smart to sacrifice er I mean LET Mr Jenny take those photos! Gorgeous poppys by the way!

  20. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH how pretty!!!! I love the poppies and the pollen drunken bees...Smart move....getting Mr. Jenny to take the picks...

Pollen oh how we have all the horrible green stuff stuck to everything.....all I have to do...is go outside and roll around in the grass and I can be a drunken pollen MeMe...except for the fact that my eyes are swollen, coughing and sneezing....I think I am all ready drunken from the pollen!!!

    Love ya girlie!!!

  21. That last shot is a hoot! LOL! And how funny that the bees get drunk on the pollen. I never thought of that! Loved hearing about this. And the poppies are GORGEOUS.

Gee, I wonder if we rolled in the pollen if we would get happy, too??? ;-)

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  24. I love poppies. I have some giant poppies in my garden; huge and bright red - not quite yet though.

  26. Very cool shots! As a person who's been stung once too often, Mr. Jenny is my new hero.

    ;)

  27. I am absolutely phobic when it comes to bees or wasps. I'm 65 years old and I've never been stung, but I run like crazy when I see one.

Those pictures are very good. I haven't seen poppies since NJ and assumed they needed a cooler climate. I'm surprised they do so well by you. I could be wrong, but I don't think they grow here...at least I've never seen them. Of course, if they attract bees like that I wouldn't plant them due to the phobia.

  28. Mr. Jenny is totally brave ... i wouldn't get near the little things ... they sting ... like really sting .... and your poppies are so pretty!!!

  29. I love to watch the bees take a little detour from the work they're supposed to be doing. Your poppy patch would be the perfect place. Out in my beloved desert, I have been known to watch one bee in one cactus flower for hours, taking a number of pictures I'm too embarrassed to tell you, while shouting, "Look! Look!" I wonder why they fascinate so much. Thanks for the backyard tour.

  30. Bees are such amazing creatures. We had several beehives at the farm when we bought it and the bees are still happily using them. There are also at least two bee trees up in the woods that are honeybees that swarmed from the hives when they got too full.

I've gotten some cool photos of different bees in the daffodils in the early spring. This year they were all over the vitex bushes. A couple of my bee photos that are online. (It was cold and the bees were moving slowly.)

I feel intoxicated just looking at all the yummy pollen.

  33. My little sister is a bee charmer. She catches them with her bare hands, lets them crawl on her and pets them. It is sort of creepy. If my little sister has been catching bees since she was five, you would think two grown ups would be able to get close enough for a good picture!

But not me. They have stingers!

  34. What a fun post...you have me giggling. Mr. Jenny did great getting those shots they are really good. Your flowers are gorgeous. Hugs

  35. Pretty photos. Tell hubby he does not need to google that subject anymore he can just email my hubby because he has already studied up!

  36. I had to take my hummingbird feeders down because of those darned bees! They clogged the tube and wouldn't leave us alone! Love Steve's photos! What a brave soul!!

  37. Oh my gosh, that bee really does look like he is rolling around in the flower to get that pollen... just look at that last picture! With all the stuff we hear on the news about colony collapse and sick bees, it's good to know there are still places that have healthy and happy drunk bees!! :-)

  38. Great photos and wonderful writing. :-)

You always manage to make me smile.

  39. Love these pics! And I would probably stand far away and use a really long lense!

What really scares me though are scorpions. Not that that really has anything to do with your post. Except, they both sting, huh?

bees are cute, scorpions are ugly

ok, going to bed now! ;)
