She planted the cabbage in my garden November 26th and at the time she decided she wanted to name her plant. Since she wanted the cabbage to grow really big she said, "I'm going to name my plant Greg." Greg is her Dad. He is almost 6'8" tall.
I told her the object was to make the cabbage as wide as possible instead of as tall as possible.
She looked at me, her Grandma of some girth. She looked at the cabbage. She looked at me again. She opened her mouth...and then smart girl that she is she said, "Yeah, Grandma, I'm going to name my cabbage Greg!"
So Greg has been happily growing in the garden since the end of November and now that we're having a heat spell, he decided to crack. Not crack up. Just crack.
So...
Last night we pulled him up by his little roots and took a lot of pictures and weighed him...a little over ten pounds, thank you very much...
I just can't help but thinking, though, that maybe she should have named the cabbage after me.
Then we would have had a twenty pounder for sure!
Sigh...

Big and Beautiful Greg just isn't the same as Big and Beautiful Jenny either! Granddaughter is a real cabbage patch doll, though!
Now that is a big cabbage. Hope you have a lot of recipes.
Not sure I could eat anything I named. She has the soul of a gardener.
Great story and wonderful photos too! :-)
Thanks as always for making me smile. x
Will she be eating Gregg?
I have a nice corned beef brisket, named Dharma in the freezer. She wants to know if Greg would like to come for Sunday dinner....

You have me laughing this morning. I just hope you all like cabbage because 10 pounds is still a pretty good size. She's so cute proudly posing with her cabbage.
Jenny, Joey brought home one of those plants last week...We (I) didn't get it in the ground for a couple days and it's not looking so good...Hopefully it'll grow!
Love the pics of Julia and her cabbage!
Nice cabbage and the smile on her face is priceless. If she named it after me it might have been a 30 pounder! hugs, Linda
Oh my gosh, Jenny, this is amazing! Now, I need to name my plants too!

All I can think when I see that is "Feed me, Seymour! Feed me." I think he looks more like an Audrey 2 than a Greg. And that is amazingly huge for a cabbage!

That's one big cabbage... I'm naming my next one after myself so it won't have problems putting on the lbs :+)
What a fun school project! Greg is one marvelous cabbage! She could make a lot of slaw with that!
Lemons arrived at my house today! Thank you, Jenny!!! Seems that everything you grow in your garden gets mighty big... these lemons are huge! WOW, I am so impressed that they all came from your tree! I am going to have a wonderful time these next couple of days making lemony foods... and I'll probably freeze some juice into cubes, for making lemonade later too. (We did that when I was a kid... someday I'll have to tell the story about the Limao Bravo which had huge thorns, so picking them was tricky. ) Stop by and see my post.
Now that is a head of cabbage if ever I saw one. My hubby would love having it if I had a pot large enough to cook it in. I must say it is a pretty head of cabbage too. Hugs
WOW !!! That is one big cabbage, and one beautiful little Julia !
