Spam and Sacrifice...(and a teensy giveaway, too)

You know how I told you about all the food the caterer was making?

I didn't tell you that I came up with the brilliant idea of using cans of Spam for risers under certain trays. I love this idea. It makes me laugh.
I told the caterer I would bring the cans along and he looked at me a little weirdly. I'm not sure why. Doesn't everyone use Spam on their buffet table?

Besides. Spam is Crazy Tasty now. At least that's what the can says.

Somehow, oddly, I doubt that to be true advertising.

Gosh, I'm running out of time to tell you stuff.

Did I tell you that we have a live swing band playing, which is cool! But do you also know that you can call Arthur Murray Dance studios and they will send a couple out who will do a dance demonstration followed by a little dance class - for FREE! I'm excited about this even though I don't dance. But I'm gonna dance on Friday night.

After all, I will be in disguise and no-one will know it's me! Between the cats eye glasses, a beehive, and the authentic shades of lipstick I researched and bought (bright orange and bright red)no-one will believe that plain, old me could be so glamorous and exotic. So when the crowd gathers around the dance floor they will be struck with admiration and awe wondering "who is that glamorous and exotic woman wearing cat eye glasses and a beehive" and I will simply ignore them like the peasants they are and dance on...basking in the glory and dancing with wild abandon.

Ha.

That was actually really funny.

And now for the sacrifice part of this post.

I totally did this for you.

If this doesn't prove that I appreciate you for reading my blog nothing ever will.

Ladies and... ummmm.... ladies... I give you... I was shocked and amazed that hardly anybody knows this candy. This is possibly the best candy ever invented in the history of candy. It contains all natural ingredients such as corn syrup, sugar, corn starch, modified food starch AND artificial flavors and colors such as Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 1 and Yellow 5. If that is not enough to whet your appetite I give you, in all its unwrapped glory...a Chuckles Jelly Candy Bar... Please take a moment to admire the glistening beauty of the sugar encrusted jewels of gummy goodness.

Chuckles must be eaten in descending order of preference. Always. For me, the green one must be sacrificed first. Followed closely by the yellow one. And then and only then can you move into the sweet perfection that only the orange, black and red can give you.
The last morsel must always be the red. The red is the pinnacle of jelly candy perfection. It should be savored like a fine wine...enjoyed and admired like a Rembrandt or Picasso. Ahhhh....

I am complete now. I have shared the glory of a Chuckles bar with you and I think, perhaps, my mission in life is complete.

And since I feel somewhat cruel having tortured you with all this sweet perfection I am going to do a silly little giveaway .... just today... out of all the comments you leave.

In the giveaway will be one of every single kind of candy I have on the candy table for my Dad's party PLUS a WW II foam plastic-y glider plane PLUS a pair of Cat's eye glasses.

Can you imagine such riches?

Well, if you are the lucky winner of this amazing giveaway you won't have to.

You will hold in your own two hands the perfection that is Chuckles (along with all the rest of the candy INCLUDING a giant box of Crows)

I'll do the drawing tomorrow night around 8:00 pm Arizona time so any comments made before that time will be eligible.

I won't, however, ship your prize out until Saturday or Monday cuz I am gonna be one busy, busy girl!

And don't forget, our second practice of Alphabe-Thursday will be on ... well, d'oh....Thursday. McLinkey will be open for your links Thursday, Friday and Saturday...

And our letter for this week will be "B".

Thanks for making this party planning so much fun!

I really appreciate you all.

And to prove it I'm willing to put my Chuckles on the line.

Just for you.

Because I'm cool like that.

Sigh.

Did you miss the previous story in the ongoing party planning saga! Don't panic...simply click here and it will be amazingly displayed before your very eyes!

NOTE: There is a small chance that your particular Chuckles package may be missing the red candy. Probably not, but there is a small possibility and I am all about full disclosure here at the Jenny Matlock blog.

It's alright Jenny, as long as the orange one is still intact we'll be good!
I do think however that you should seriously consider a pair of gold sandals to complete your lovely outfit. I must buy myself a pair of gold sandals!

I love Chuckles but haven't seen them for a long time! I eat the yellow, then green, black, orange and yes - save the red for last! Good memories!

Hilarious! I especiallly enjoy your enthusiasm towards the red candy. I generally eat red candy last as well because red usually equals cherry which equals good.

Chuckles! I love those things (as does my dentist) What a fun giveaway! Love the idea of the spam cans to elevate the catering trays - what a hoot. I really hate the stuff, but it makes me laugh. We even have a "Spam-O-Rama" in Austin every year, you wouldn't believe what people make with that stuff. Sounds like this is going to be a blast, can't wait to see pictures. Kathy

I have never heard of the candy but there hasn't been a sugary item I haven't met that I didn't like and oooh how badly I would love the glasses! My sister use to wear some and I would love to taunt her! Please, oh, please pick me!

I want some of those yummy treats!!! They look like the kind that when I chew them, they get stuck in my teeth and pull out my bridgework!!! What fun your party is going to be!!! Your dad is so lucky to have a little girl like you!!!!

Girl- I have never heard of Chuckles but I am obsessed with all things food so if I don't win can I get you to send me some anyway? I will pay you for it just for giggles i'd love to try it!! Have fun at the party.

Betty said...

I remember that candy! I think I should win because I don't like red. It's my least favorite flavor, so if I win you can keep the red because I'd just give it to my husband any way.

OK, OK you twisted my arm I would love to share some candy with you! But could you add a can of Spam too?! There is a little joke in our family about how my youngest daughter buys Spam when she is down and fries it to make sandwiches with. My dad use to visit for a couple of weeks in the summer and would watch my daughters when I worked instead of sending them to daycare. He never was a cook but he could fry Spam or baloney for lunch. Candy for me Spam for Shannon! lol! Your so much fun!

Love the spam idea! Very vintage. Now truth be told, I had never heard of Chuckles either but didn't want to appear dumb. I am so glad to hear I am not alone in my ignorance! I would be glad to take some candy off your hands, I am more than willing to help out a fellow blogger by eating their candy stash and saving them from themselves. I'm just generous that way!

I like your spam idea... Do you remember 'potted meat'???? Gads--wonder what is really in that stuff????

Your Chuckles description made my mouth water... Add me to your list!!!!

I thought you liked the BLACK ones the best though....

Thanks for stopping by my blog and becoming a follower. I enjoyed coming by and reading your blog.

I have to say that I haven't heard of Chuckles, but maybe growing up in the South in a small town had something to do with it? I wouldn't touch the black, (probably not ever and since you read my silly post you will get that), so if I ever got Chuckles, you could have those. The red always, always get saved until the end, and the green always go first.

Jen said...

Jenny, I needed a good smile/laugh, so I come to your blog and found what I was looking for...thanks. I was thinking you were giving away SPAM at first. :) I remember CHUCKLES, haven't seen them in years! Have a great party and wishing myself luck. :)

and I want to win the Bit-O-Honey! :D

You are the most GENEROUS soul on the face of the earth..there is nothing I would rather win than an assortment of the candy and I would even be willing to forego the CHUCKLES so you could have it all, if the gods that be make me the winner.

Red was always the bestest one; and I always gave the black one away because it was that anise-y tasting black licorice like black jelly beans and black twizzlers. Who invented those?

What about Bonomo Turkish Taffy? You whack it and you crack it...remember? And they wonder why we all got cavities back then!

Unknown said...

How about putting my name into the hat! Lovin' the giveaway. I'm looking forward to the cat eye glasses. I actually rocked that look in the 60's.

Amy said...

Thank you for the demo of Chuckles! I was dying to know what they were. I'm thinking the black would be my favorite...does it by chance taste like licorice? YUM! Can't wait to see pictures of you all glammed up. :)

We have a quaint little tourist town lined with independent shops called Volant Mills, and the have a store filled with retro candy. I think I saw some Chuckles there, but I never had them. I bought a bag of the most extraordinary candy corn- it was red, white, and blue and tasted like raspberry lemonade. Oh man, I couldn't stop eating it!

I'm looking forward to more ABC fun.

Cora said...

Wow....what a SWEET give-away!
Great ideas with the spam too.
Have fun as always!

Unknown said...

Spam should ONLY be used as risers for trays of real food on the buffet table! Please don't let any of that stuff sneak out onto the table to be eaten .... yuck.

Chuckles ... I've never had those, but they are so pretty and you love them so, they must be wonderful.

And cat eye glasses would be perfect for horrifying the children ... ;)

I love chuckles too. I found them a while back at a local store that sells all kinds of oldie-goodie stuff and I screeched when I saw them. I embarassed my kids. They deserve it though...all thost fits they threw in public.
I also saw the baked beans candy...do you remember those? Maybe they were not baked beans. they were red.bumpy bean candy. SOunds great huh?
I wanna win!!!

Ahhh, memories,... i grew up on spam, both fresh from can for sandwiches and fried for supper meat. Yes, we didn't have much money. But will admit that I seldom buy it now. it's way too salty! and Chuckles... love them!

Corrie Howe said...

Chuckles must be a regional candy, because I remember having them at some point in my life. And I have been to AZ a number of times in my life since my grandparents and Uncle lives there.

How fun to celebrate your dad's b-day. Mine just turned 70. Mom and Dad didn't want anything but dinner with my family since he just accepted a promotion to General Manager of his company from the Corporate office the day prior.

What happened to you retiring at 70, Dad?

mub said...

I have to confess. Sometimes I just really have a craving for SPAM... and beans... with a slice of pineapple. Then I'll eat it and be okay for the next 3-7 years ;)

Hi Jenny! You are so funny!! I am so glad you stopped by to visit me, so I could visit you, lol! Oh my gosh, I LOVE Chuckles! I have not had them since I was little. My grandpa used to bring them to me. He said he had them a lot in the Korean War. Those and Hershey Bars would be treats for them.
Your party sounds like it will be just amazing!! I cant wait to read all about it :)
Hugs,

Hi Jenny! I've never had Chuckles & I don't know why? If they're anything like Dots, then I would love them. However, the black one would go in the garbage ~ ick. And the green one would have to be last. I am a lime lover thru & thru. ♥

Pat @ Mille Fiori Favoriti said...

Hi Jenny

I know Chuckles! Like you, the red piece was always left to last to savor..lol
Do you know NECCO waffers? I loved those now hard to find candies even more! A bag full of candy sounds like the best give away ever!

I love the SPAM idea! I've seen large cans of tomato sauce used by many caterers as a platform, so a tower of SPAM will be even more fun! Afterwards you can have a neighborhood luau and serve it up with pineapple slices. Spam is still very popular in Hawaii.

I'll be joining in the Alphabe event tomorrow --I finding have a fully functioning computer! Weee!

Hugs, Pat

One of our sons-in-law is called Chuck. Back when he was still my daughter's "boyfriend" we gave him a surprise birthday party and included Chuckles in his gifts. Perhaps that was the thing that prompted his subsequent proposal to her. :)

I did not realize there was such magic in the red one.

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!! You eat them all wrong. I believe the rules say that you can eat them in any order you want as long as you save the best for last which is GREEN!!! Obviously your package came WITHOUT the rule book. Sorry to be so harsh with you but someone had to set you straight!!!!!

Spam! That was "invented" right here in Nebraska -- don't know if I should be proud of that or not. Can't wait to see your display with it. I actually had to buy a can last summer for a 4-H project board (best size for holding notes). I was shocked that it actually comes in a variety of flavors and even a take-along size. The kids actually loved a hot spam sandwich, but my hubby was not impressed. Darn.

Geez, it took me 15 minutes to get to the end of the comments so I could write mine.

I would GIVE AWAY the black one, then eat green, orange, yellow then red last.

Now I am hungry!

LOL, Jenny! Be careful with those dance instructors. Sometime I will tell the story of what happened to me at a banquet when some "dancers" showed up and performed. LOL! It was indecent, but I will keep you holding on that note. ;-)

I wish I, too, could be a participant in the drawing, but I'm forced to disqualify myself. I can't have chocolate, and I have won so many drawings that I'm starting to feel like a true magpie, a shiny object thief! So I will let the others have a shot.

Can't wait to hear ALL about the par-tay!

XO,
