"You have such pretty eyes," he said.
"How can you tell?" she said.
"Huh?" he said.
"How can you even tell in my old, fat, wrinkled, haggard, rapidly-aging face?" she said.
He paused.
She raised her eyebrow at him.
"Never mind," he said.
And walked off, puzzled.
Sigh.
Perhaps she should have just said, "Thank you!"

Perhaps:) Have a blessed day dear Jenny, HUGS!
That's rather how I take a compliment, Dahling. Either that or stand there with my mouth hanging open in shock because I receive them so seldom!
Hahaha! Oh, Jenny. You surprise lots of people with your cleverness.
I would think that would be the best choice.
Ah yes - been there and done that. I think that somewhere along the line someone should give as much time to that as to saying regular 'please and thank you'.
Oh yes, I can relate. Why is it that we put ourselves down so often?
I do that all the time. Why is it so hard to say thank you without trying to discount what the person is saying, ha!!
Sometimes it's hard to appreciate compliments. I used to just say "Thank you", now I wonder if something's wrong with HIS eyes!
"Thank you" is the best answer when given a compliment.
It's tough sometimes when we're brought up to be modest and humble. So...we become self-deprecating.
Never figured out how to just say thank you, without doubting the other persons sanity.
Yeah, that's sort of what I do too...sadly. Thank you is probably a better choice...

Lets see-- it has been a while but I think I still rely on just "thank you" and try not to question their judgment.
Now THAT is funny!
Perhaps?
I'll just repeat what he said:
You have such pretty eyes. :)
I'm sure he's right.
Women really are from Venus!
You are so funny Jenny...
I agree 100% with the Comment by Pam Beers.
I find it very difficult to accept a compliment and just say "Thank you."
HaHaHa~
LOL! yes, we do need to just say thank you sometimes... maybe he didnt see all those "flaws" before they were mentioned! LOL!! you crack me up!
xoxo
Oh my gosh. Yes, just say Thank you. :)
XOXO
hahaha ...poor fella! That reminds me of the commercial where Mrs. Lincoln asks Abe if her dress makes her backside look bigger... and then being Honest Abe, says, "...well...just a little..."
I remember getting my hubby's first compliments when we dated and being all bashful and thinking "Aw!"
And then throughout the years of 31+ marriage, sometimes (not all the time), after a compliment given, thinking "Hm...what is he fishing for?" :o)
And then some other times, I would have that same reaction as you posted.
But typically, whenever my hubby says something sweet, I will reply with an honest compliment back...like "You are soooo handsome!" Or "You are such a hunk!"
Love your posts and visiting again!
Blessings & Aloha!
It can be hard to take a compliment. Especially if as a kid or a young wife you never got them. Does this ring a bell?
