I used to be smarter.

I used to be a whiz at technology.

Hey.

Don't roll your eyes.

It's true.

Or at least I thought I was.

When we got back from vacation, my desktop computer had been fried.

In a bad way.

Not in a tasty way with golden brown tempura batter and some kind of tasty, caloric dip.

Mr. Jenny took it to our computer repair guy.

The computer guy said, "Hmmm...your computer is fried."

He, however, did not make any reference to food.

Probably why he's skinny and I'm not.

Sigh.

However.

He did say he could move things from the hard-drive...and Mr. Jenny assured me my computer would be just the same when everything was transferred over.

So Mr. Jenny spent wayyyy too much time looking at Best Buy ads, searching on-line, etc. to find the perfect computer for me.

The tech guy did his transfer thing.

Mr. Jenny hooked it up for me.

Mr. Jenny lied.

"What is all this weird stuff on my computer?" I asked.

"That's all your stuff," he said.

"This isn't all my stuff!   Where are my programs?   Where is Outlook Express?   Where is Dreamweaver?  Where is publisher?   Where is..."

Mr. Jenny interrupted me.  "All the software from your old computer is obsolete.   This is the new software for the same thing."

"This isn't the same stuff as my old computer!" I shouted in panic.  "Nothing is the same!   How do I even get e-mails?   What is going on!  You told me it would be the same!   This is going to fry my brain!"

Yeah.   I'm all kinds of calm in panic-type situations.

Or...perhaps not.

So I very politely asked Mr. Jenny to close the door to my office and give me some time alone with my new computer.

I am always polite when I am feeling extremely hostile.

Aren't you?

So far I have resisted throwing the computer through the window.

So far I have resisted taking a hammer to it.

So far I have resisted not googling new and more creative swear words to express my displeasure.

BUT, I ask you...

Whyohwhyohwhyohwhyohwhy do people have to screw around with software?

Version 1.0 works perfectly fine.

Whyohwhyohwhyohwhyohwhy are we so dependent on our computers that when they crash we can't even find addresses?

Geez.

Geez.

I'm thinking I might have to go back to the old way of doing things.

You know.

Letters with stamps.   Ledger sheets.  Adding machines.  Address books with 40 re-written addresses under each person I know.  Typing on a computer.

Hmmm...

Hmmm...

Okay.

Maybe I am overreacting just a little bit.

Maybe new software versions are a good thing.

Maybe the old way is too hard.

But the newest way?

Geez.

I think it would be easier, though,  if I was as smart as I used to be on my old computer.

Sigh.

hmmm...seems to me it would have been the perfect opportunity to make the leap from PC to mac and never look back. It's so liberating...don't they have a 30day money back thing a ma bob? Do it!! You won't be sorry!!!

I feel your pain, o my sister. Meanwhile, hang in there. Breathe. And keep clicking. What you need is bound to pop up eventually. (Or not, of course.)

So did you go Mac or Windows? And if you went Windows 7, my heart goes out to you.
I back up everything now on an external drive, just to make sure I don't lose thousands of scanned images.

ah, yes, technology... they change so often it's hard to keep up.

I think they should only release only version of a software when they get it right instead of keep releasing different versions and making us update and update and there's really no end. but we don't really have a choice except, like you said, going back to the old ways of paper and pen...

hope you're having a non-stressful day.

I agree with Anita... however... I wouldn't go with white! I LOVE my Mac, even if I'm not the most technologically advanced person in the world.

O.k., so I get it. You're freaking out. BUT would you buy someone airline tickets to fly to Tucson, drive with you to Brunswick, then fly home from Jacksonville just so that person can hook up the computers for you? Would you go that far???? WELLLLL, I did.

I feel your pain.....I'm sure there is a lot more I could say or words of comfort I could offer, but really all I can think of is that I feel your pain.

That's the way it always is with me. About the time I think I know what I'm doing, something goes wrong, and I have to try to learn to do it a new way. If I weren't so addicted to blogs and email, I'd give it all up. Good luck with the new stuff. laurie

It will get better, I had the same experience with a new computer! The new way of doing almost everything seemed so complicated, but in the end I conquered it! ☺

I often wonder what would happen if we all of sudden didn't have all this techno stuff. I start having withdrawals after one day when my computer isn't working!! There would have to be support groups and techno rehab!! I am the first one to sign up!! Cathy

You can go back to the old ways if you like, but you are going to have a heck of a time writing letters to every one of us every day! ~ Maureen

I can understand your frustration, but me personally, I love get new computers. I get super excited about doing what you are doing.

Before you know it, you will totally understand the updated software and embrace it. Good luck and try to enjoy a bit of it.

I hear you loud and clear...some of my old softwares don't even work on new machines...I can't stand some of the new softwares they aren't made for my brain and I can't figure out why the makers don't know that. If it makes you feel any better I made my mom switch from Windows to Mac last year and she survived so I bet you will too!!!

I like new things to come in little bits; tiny bitesize bits that I can look at out of the corner of my eye, stroll past with only the briefest of pauses to push the odd button and then, finally, sit down to examine with a mug of hot coffee. I do NOT like change to come in one great big squishy dollop of incomprehensibleness!

Wow, I understand and feel for you. So sorry you have to go through this but you're not alone. Brain teasers are good for us they say, LOL. Hang in there, Jenny! xo Jenny

Letters with stamps? Handwriting? Oh, my hand is cramping up just thinking about it. LOL
Best of luck with your new stuff; technology can be a butt-head sometimes.

Some people get so excited about new software and new fancy phones. It's all too challenging. Why do we need time to learn phones? Phones used to be so easy.

You have my deepest sympathy. When I had to get a new computer and move from XP to windows 7 I hated it.
