Oh the secrets my tooth could tell...

I need a root canal.

And did you know that dentists give you pain pills now to see you through until your procedure so at this exact moment I am typing carefully...afraid that my medicated tooth might make me blab...

You know?

Have you ever done that?

A friend says "How are today?" in a truly "just semi-polite" way and you start babbling away. Crying into tissues. Your friend gets all freaked out and uncomfortable and pats your hand. And make you tea.

And the next day you feel like a fool cuz you told them all this stuff you didn't plan on telling them...

...and you have to lay low for a few days until you think they might have kinda/sorta forgotten some of the dirty details...

Huh?

This has never happened to you?

Are you kidding me?

Seriously?

OK, See? See? The tooth is making me talk already so I better sign off for now.

When I told somebody I was needing a root canal they started telling the horror stories of how bad theirs was and it made my tooth all frightened.

... and now the tooth is wanting to whine to you about how much it hurts and how scared it is about the root canal and wah, wah, wah...

Geez. What a baby of a tooth.

But me?

Jenny?

I'm just fine.

Not scared a bit. La. La. La.

Really I'm not.

That's my story and I'm totally sticking to it.

Sigh...

The first root canal I had was horrifying, and it hurt for weeks afterwards! The second one I had (wow this makes me sound like I have horrible teeth haha) didn't hurt... at all. If you have a good dentist I think you'll be okay. If not, I look forward to reading some interesting pain-killer fueled postings ;)

Good luck with your tooth!

I have heard such horror stories. I hope yours in more live a wonderful dream.

I had three root canals on the same tooth, and in the middle of the third one, I told them to pull it out because I couldn't taken another three hour failed procedure. They blamed me and my narrow roots. I will get the next one yanked before I get another root canal. But that's just my teeth.
Good luck!

I've only had one so far... and it wasn't anything so horrible. They gave me lots of numbing drugs and I never felt a thing! What made me mad was that they put Sleepless in Seattle on the ceiling TV and then blocked my view for the whole procedure!

so how did it go? I had one a couple years ago...wasn't bad. The worst part for me is the "block" thing they stick in your mouth to keep it open. I'm always afraid it's gonna make my jaw snap so that it will never close again!

I have a FEAR of DENTIST...I go into the office and the smell sends me into a HUGE PANIC!!!!

I have had several root canals and HONEST....none have been that painful!!!! I usually don't even take the pain meds...just some Tylenol.

I wish you the best...I promise...it will be fine!!!!

Love ya girlie!!! :-)

My mom swears the root canal is easy it is the crown afterwards that is hard. Hang in there...

I am absolutely terrified of the dentist. Shake, tremble, nauseous - the whole nine yards. But I've had two root canals and they really weren't that awful. The worst part for me was the dread before hand. I can't take most pain meds (allergic to all the "good stuff"), and I did just fine with plain old Ibuprofen afterwards. Good luck! Kat

My man had a root canal and a crown recently, it went really smoothly and easily and he didn't feel a thing. (Don't listen to the scary stories!)

I love your posts, you make me smile. Hope yout tooth is soon sorted. x

You'll do great and then it will be over and you'll have a Happy Tooth.

I just found out last week that I need one and possibly two myself! I blogged all about it of course.
I finally made the appointment with the endodontist for the "evaluation" tomorrow and asked what the going rate is for a root canal. I nearly passed out!
I'm not having any kind of constant pain with mine so no pain meds here.

Ouch, a root canal. I've had one before and the pain prior to getting it all patched up at the dentist is one I'd love to forget. It's not *that* bad afterwards. Sure, you'll feel sore and eating will hurt but you'll have painkillers right?

I babble nonsense when I'm on painkillers too. Well, I babble nonsense on a daily basis but I'd much rather blame that on pain pills :)

Never had a root canal. had all my wisdom teeth removed though. Don't they put you out for that ? they did for me .

The only thing that scares me about a root canal, and I've had a few, is the cost.

waaaaa.I never was offered any pain medication for root canals..and I have lots of them. I never had a problem...I adored my dentist and then he up and retired on me..sigh...have never been happy with one since...

I'm a big baby about the dentist, but the truth is, root canals aren't bad at all. I fall asleep. Really. Between the drugs, the suction-thingy that keeps one from choking, and the soothing music, I can't stay awake.
Go for it Jenny!

I had an incompetent dentist that did a hack job on my teeth when I was a teenager (bad fillings, unnecessary bonding, etc.). Now, I need every procedure known to modern dentistry to repair or replace what Dr. Idiot did.

I've had several root canals at my current dentist's office and had no problems with them. They were painless during the procedure and only slightly sore afterward. I'm sure you'll be just fine!

I don't think I've ever spilled any big secrets while on pain meds. The location of that briefcase full of cash is still safe, as far as I know!

Never been sure it is helpful to hear those bad stories beforehand. I have had a number of root canals due to high sensitivity issues - have not a problem. The level of dental technology now is so high & always has the patients comfort uppermost. We have come so far since the '50's when I was growing up!

You will do very well & that is the story from my teeth!!

I feel for you! Nothing deserves sympathy more than a root canal. Well maybe a bullet wound. Maybe.
You will feel better once the torturous procedure has been done. I guarantee it!Hugs!~Ames

Each root canal is different. Don't let 'em scare you with horror stories. If you trust your dentist, and he knows you need lots of novicane, [spelling???]... It will be fine.

My phrase for how much pain killer I need is... "Enough to knock out a horse." Works pretty well, for me.

,-)

UGH...been there! done that! and I hate the dentist...I avoid it at all, I mean ALL costs!

I have had too many root canals, mostly just fine but one was a horror story. Honestly, the technology today makes this procedure pretty easy going. Just don't let them test the tooth too many times.

RedBettySummer said...

Oh, yea, after the root canal, when the pain meds are still in your system- don't make any phone calls. That doesn't go well. Don't take any calls either.

Linda @ A La Carte said...

Poor Jenny! Tell your tooth they have wonderful drugs that will make you forget everything....of course I can't guarantee you won't blab you life story first! Good Luck!

Judie said...

Ugh! Sorry for all that pain! And I know how they can make you Mrs. Blabbermouth, so stick close to home and don't answer the phone!!

Susan Anderson said...

I've never had one. But I'll be scared the first time I do. And I have a tooth that I think might be on the way....

Good luck, Jenny. I'm sure all will be well.

Ooch! That sounds horrible. Quite honestly, I am living in fear of that. I know I have a cavity, but we don't have insurance, so I just keep hoping and praying it doesn't turn into anything worse. Good luck with yours. And I am a little disappointed you didn't spill your guts. That could have made for a fun read. At any rate, I hope it goes very painlessly for you.

J said...

i have a cavity that needs to be filled, so i understand your pain...

i really don't know how bad my teeth are because i haven't been to a dentist in a long time.

i don't think they're that bad, though. this is the first one to give me trouble.

Val said...

I have never had a root canal and I hope you tell us it was smooth sailing!!!! = )))

I actually don't mind root canals. They give me a pill, I lay back and convince myself I'm in the Virgin Islands on the beach with a nice breeze and Bam! It's over.

I just had a root canal, like 3 hours ago! Let me tell you...I didn't feel a thing! I was scared to death to go in today, because we tried last week, and I couldn't do got through with it. I was in pain, mostly because I had an abcess and I had been suffering for a couple of weeks. Went in today and was so relieved that there was no pain at all. At one point I was reassuring my dentist that all was fine and that he needn't worry about inflicting any pain. I think today was the first time I ever laughed while sitting in the dentist's chair.

Hope your tooth feels better soon! And best of luck during your root canal.

Anita said...

I've never had one. And I hope I'll still be able to say that on my death bed. :)

Let us know how it goes.

And thanks for reminding me of how drugs make you tell all. The next time I have to "go under" I'll have to pray that I don't tell all.

Actually, I hope I don't need to be "put out" again for any reason.

EnJOy your Day!

Was the pill a truth serum?
Jenny, I have had plenty of root canals. They are not as bad as you hear.(My dentist is an all star) But YOU can milk it at home for all it is worth. You will have a few days of rest if you let Mr. Jenny know how bad you feel.
Take the meds and rest...you will be good as new.
As Mo would say: I Pwomise.

I don't remember anything afterward, just not able to eat! Hope you're all better..

Eh...root canals aren't that big of a deal. Really... Just tell them to give you more of what you took and you will be good! Really.

(And I love that famous Matlock sigh.!)
