SCREEEEECCCHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

We interrupt regularly scheduled blog posting for breaking news!

Yes, I am doing two posts today but only because it is important.

So...

There is this house right by my house (huh?) that has the most astonishing garage sales...I have bought almost all of my cool antique stuff from them. They have unusual things and they are really reasonable.

So...

This morning I was supposed to meet my daughter-in-law to pick up Morgan.

And I turned at the corner heading to get her and let out out a gasp!

They were having a garage sale.

A huge one.

I didn't want to be late.

But...

When I drove by I immediately saw this little table and it reminded me of something my daughter has been looking for... ... so I parked at the curb with my car running and I ran it up to the girl at the table and said, "I live right down the street, could you hold this for me because I don't have any money and I have to pick up my Granddaughter!"

And she said, "I know who you are! Sure!"

And as I was running back to the car I saw this iron grist mill...
... and I've been looking for something like that for a specific spot on my wall so I lugged it up to the table, too.

As I was running back to the car the second time, I saw about 12 more things I wanted including double glass doorknobs for $6 bucks a pair, some flow-blue plates, gorgeous teacups and some cool metal skeleton keys.

Yikes! No time to stop.

I called Mr. Jenny and tried to con him into going up there and grabbing those things but he inconsiderately had a conference call or some other such silliness. How could he possibly have to work when I needed him to go buy this stuff. He wasn't amenable to dropping everything and running to get Morgan either.

But I figured I would hurry her along and get back there while there was still cool stuff left.

So I picked her up.

Yea.

Ummm....

When we got to preschool she walked like a turtle with a cast on.

Then she had to go the bathroom.

Number two.

Then she had to wash her hands...twice...singing the alphabet song the whole time.

Then her teacher wanted to talk to me.

Then she needed to show me just one more microscopic injury that needed kissed.

Geez.

And when I got back to the garage sale everything that I wanted was gone.

But I brought my other stuff home and just when I was turning the corner someone put up a new garage sale sign.

So...

I ran in the house and told Mr. Jenny I was going to run up there but he said, "Wait, we'll just walk up there!"

And when we got there it was all really cool antique stuff.

And I immediately went to an old wall mounted desk and a little primitive trunk and a cool wooden trug but some other lady, who I saw pull in right before we walked up there had already grabbed them.

Argggghhhh!

Sigh.

And why is it that when you want children and husbands to hurry they go so ridiculously slow?

Sigh.

But at least I got two treasures and I thought I'd share something with you other then the boring, old losing weight whining!

Fabulous finds, Jenny! I never find nice things at yard sales. I think the experts get there at the crack of dawn and pick out all the goodies.

Oh man, I haven't been to a garage sale in ages! Now that we're back from our trip, I think garage sale season will be in full swing in a couple of weeks...yay!

And congratulations on your great finds. Some of my most favorite stuff I got at garage sales and thrift shops.

I love garage sales! I love treasure hunting! Good job!

sounds like you struck gold, or could have had folks hurried up and pottied and teachers have not needed to talk to you. sometimes life just gets in the way of life!

It looks like you found a few great things anyway. I missed out on a couple of good things last week too but I stopped by a garage sale today and got some nice vintage jewelry, including cameos.
I just posted my thrift store finds - come on by!

Thanks,
Laura

If you ever come to The Netherlands you need to come on Queen's Day. The entire country turns into a huge flea market, it's brilliant!

Jenny - it's called Murphy's Law! They'd have been in a hurry if you wanted time to browse. You can't win!

Oh how cool! :o)

There's a big estate sale going on right now & I SO wish I could be there. Just think of the treasures I'm missing out on?! Waaa.

The little table is just as cute as can be. Can't wait to see what she does with it.

I am the same way about garage sales and not everyone understands especially family members who think you should tend to your "important responsibilities" They just don't get it do they?
Cool finds though...

Oh yard sales. Nothing could be better. And I want to know why on earth people would give those things away, anyway! Don't they know how great antiques are?

Kathleen said...

Oh I don't go anymore..too dangerous..And since we pay per bag for garbage, no way to get rid of things..So I just paid 400 bucks for a dumpster to get rid of the things I bought at other people's sales!

So I was secretly hoping this post was somehow about screech owls...right up until the after HUH? then I knew - but I kept reading anyway, even though I am not a garage sale kind of gal (yet?) and read all the way to the bottom and I felt the smile on face forming larger and larger as I went on and by the end I even giggled out loud - thank goodness I am home alone! And now I am secretly wondering if I should go find a garage sale in the morning?

Cheryl said...

I think there's a 12-step program for that.

I do know quite a few people who would have done the same thing you did. (At least one of them has a husband who would have dropped everything to do the right thing in this situation.)

Jocelyn said...

Oh I was working up a sweat with you....all those goodies....oh my I want them all...and why in the world do grandchildren and husbands not cooperate!!!!

I love your finds!!! I am coming to visit!!!

Have a great weekend!!! :-)

All this and losing 15 lbs, too?! Don't you have a room for him to paint or something?

Great table!

Oh, I'm such a garage sale fan! Best and I used to go every Saturday, from the crack of dawn to lunch time. Oh, those were the days...congrats on your good finds. And there's got to some sorta law of physics (did you read "How To Survive Physics", my Wednesday post?) that explains how everyone moves slower when what you actually want them to do is hurry. I'll go look it up!

Hi Jenny,
You are so funny! But hey, a girls gotta do, what a girls gotta do. Glad you did manage to get a few good items. Don't ya just hate it when someone grabs something in front of you that you really wanted! Argh!!
Happened to me today at an estate sale, some lady grabbed a sweet little vintage vanity stool right out from under me.....boohoohoo.

Hope you see another one tomorrow and get lots of good stuff.

hugs

My kids definitely have a different definition of "hurry up" than I do!

But I am so glad you got those 2 treasures at least - they are wonderful finds! I never find any good stuff like that at garage sales!

I could feel your excitement and frustration. Glad you got some of what you wanted. My daughter was driving around looking at garage sales for a water/sand table this morning, Just as she turned the corner to one sale and saw one her two year old threw up all over the back seat, after just saying she needed to poop. I'm just saying, it could have been even worse for you.

Molly said...

Man you have me all geared up to go yard sale-ing tomorrow! It is my hometown's "city wide yard sale" day! But we have a like a 90% chance of storms...that could mean I could get lots of bargains!! Congrats on the table and iron thingy!! Sorry about the other stuff, I definitely feel your pain!

Linda @ A La Carte said...

At least you got two treasures! Darn it when that others beat you to cool things.

Wow, cool finds...seems like we always find stuff when were not looking. I found a miniature milk can today in an antique shop...about about 12 inches tall..it's so cute.

Oh, that made me laugh and laugh! I think the biggest adjustment I had to make after having my boy at age 40 was the fact that I was no longer master of my own time. I was now on HIS schedule, and still am. I wouldn't trade him for the world, so I just try to put all of those "things" that slipped past me out of my mind and focus on all the fun we're having. But old skeleton keys and wall mounted desks? *sigh* I'm sorry... bless your heart!

I LOVE finding stuff that way. And oh, how I hate losing it...

But you're right, circumstances and family members will get in the way of garage sale prizes every time.

Glad you still got 2 cool things!

=)

Garage sales are such fun when you have the time to scout them out.
It seems like I wind up with stuff I don't really need and donate it to Goodwill. I guess it's a kind of infinite recycling!

Sarah said...

What fun treasures you found. I spotted a wonderful small table at Goodwill today. Just what I've been wanting, but it is an auction only item. What is that all about? So I put down a silent bid which was double the last bid and now have to wait till tomorrow afternoon to see if I'm high bidder. On top of that they take verbal bids at that time. So I just may have to get myself back over there for the live bidding. :-) Life can get so complicated when one is shopping "resale". :-)

LuLu Kellogg said...

I am glad you got some treasures but I am howling with laughter over the grand having to do everything under the sun to slow you down, especially number two! *singing* "You can't hurry love ohhhhhhhhh you just got to wait..." lalalala......LOL

Love you dear friend,
LuLu~*xoxo

Don't worry. From the sounds of it your neighbors definitely know who you are and in the very near future they will see you pulling out of the drive and put that "YARD SALE" sign up just for you.

I'm having a garage sale tomorrow... I hope everything goes!! Since we were on the subject. Oh, and YOU and Boring don't go together. Ever. :)

RNSANE said...

I don't even stop at garage sales anymore, now that I'm retired and on a pension. It just doesn't fit into the budget. I have more than I need and I am going to have to seriously downsize pretty soon. My rent ( $2325 ) is $25 more than my monthly pension so moving is in the near future!

VKT said...

Wow! Those really were some great finds. I love yard sales too. I wish you could have gotten the doorknobs. Those sound awesome. You made me laugh all the way through this post. I have been there with my daughter. When I really need her to be somewhere, she always has to change her shoes, or go back in because she forgot something or....lol

Betty said...

I always tell myself that if it was meant to be the item would still be there. My problem is that I can't make up my mind, leave and then decide I must have it, run back and find it gone. I don't know why I torture myself like that, but I do.

Bossy Betty said...

Don't you just love it when you get the good finds!!! They are both just fabulous!

grammy said...

That is the one thing I hate about garage sales....
the missing the sale
not getting the thing you wanted
seeing someone carrying it off as you walk up the driveway...urrrgggg
then you make the mistake of asking how much did you pay for that???
why???
why did I have to ask that
???

GardenOfDaisies said...

Oh Jenny, they were just saving you from getting stuff you didn't need! :-) LOL!!!

Holly Lefevre said...

What you got is pretty awesome...I plan on hitting some sales tomorrow! I have missed out on a carousel horse (because my daughter had to go t the doctor...as if!) and an awesome imported book self thing that was like 12 feet long. There are always new treasures...but sometimes it hurts just a little.

Brenda said...

What a great score! Spring is off to a good start. Let the yard sales begin! Woo-HOO!

Tara said...

We went to a church rummage sale today and ahead of us in line were 3 ladies that sell in a competing shop down the street from us. We were all lined up at the doors, waiting for them to open and when they did...WHOOSH. Everyone flooded in. I had the Man Cub in tow so things went slowly (I am SO feeling your pain here) but my Aunt went in and watched these 3 ladies and said they flew through, throwing everything in a box that caught their eye and then sifted through it later. We need to learn how to shop like that!

Sandra said...

How funny...I know how it is when the slowpokes just don't understand the thrill of the hunt or the early bird gets the worm or at least the best stuff!

LOL!! oh the stuff I would own if it weren't for loved ones holding me back!! they'll just never understand will they?? Thanks for such a good laugh Jenny:)

i love the way you tell your adventures...you sound a lot like me! (turtle with a cast one! bwahahahahaha) So happy you were able to get a few treasures!

I can't believe she had to go #2...

If it wasn't so true it wouldn't have hit such a chord with all of us, your readers!

I laughed and sighed and shock my head...all at once.

(Ps...I whine too much about my diet, too but I haven't seen a garage sale sign all day!)

Yes, when you really want them to go fast that is definitely when they go the slowest. I haven't been to a garage sale in forever.
