I had crumbs in my bed...

Lots and lots of crumbs.

Why they got there had us all pretty stressed out for a few days.

But things are feeling better now so I can finally exhale long enough to tell you the whole 'crumby' story.

Ahem...

So...

On Wednesday morning I awoke in a crumb-free bed. I was happy because Wednesday is the day I pick up the Grandlittles after school and take them for frozen yogurt.

However...

In the early afternoon I had a phone call from my daughter-in-law telling me she was driving to school to pick up the oldest Grandlittle who had fallen on the playground and hurt her arm. She told me she would call me from the emergency room by the school.

And...

About thirty minutes after that she called back to tell me the emergency room couldn't treat her because the break was so severe and they would have to transport the poor, little kid by ambulance to a pediatric hospital so a specialist could put her broken bones back together with some metal rods and lots of pins...

So...

I went to the small hospital and saw a very pale, freckled girl hopped up on morphine but still willing to smile and tell me that she loved me and Grandpa...

Then...

I went over to elementary school to grab the littlest and middle-sized Grandlittles so they could see their sister before she was transported to have surgery.

The littlest one, Mo, cried all the way to the hospital and put her cheek onto her sisters unhurt hand and sobbed in sympathy.

The middle one held back her tears but kept repeating to me, "Oh Grandma. Her poor, little, cute freckled arm."

So...

I took them home with me.

And they had a weepy night.

However, before they went to sleep they told me that they would feel a whole lot better about everything if they could have breakfast in bed.

Our bed.

After a restless night, I prepared a sumptuous little feast for them...buttered whole wheat toast, sausage, scrambled eggs and grape juice.

Mr. Jenny kept saying, "Are you really going to let them eat breakfast in our bed? The bed is going to be full of crumbs! Just have them eat at the table."

And I told him to 'hush' because those two sweet little things really, really NEEDED to have breakfast in bed.

Their sister had a much worse night than they did, though. No surgery until Thursday late morning and no food in bed...breakfast or otherwise...just a heaping helping of pain and morphine.

The two smaller girls got to talk to their sister briefly on Thursday morning and then we got them ready for school, dried more tears, answered more questions and finally delivered them to their classrooms.

And when I got home I found out that I couldn't visit the pediatric hospital because of my recent bout of shingles.

Man.

It was harsh not being able to be by the oldest Grandlittle at all on Thursday. I had a pretty good attack of 'Grandma worries' all day.

But I finally got over them when I climbed into bed on Thursday night.

Because our bed was, indeed, full of crumbs just as my husband had predicted.

And it was kinda/sorta uncomfortable.

And distracting.

But finally on Friday she was at home and I got to see her!

She was pretty happy from her pain meds.

And even happier that her Grandpa and I took her donuts.

On Saturday, we brought all three girls to the house and then we took them to a birthday party for our son-in-law and daughter's dog, Har-Lee...

...where we were entertained by the littlest Grand trying to convince dogs to open birthday cards, the double-jointed middle Grand, and the injured Grand being impudent about ice packs on her arm.

Friday and Saturday nights we ended up sleeping with the crumbs again...

On Sunday I finally had enough time to wash and dry the sheets on the clothesline out in the sunshine and breeze.

And now the bed is back to rights...

And the oldest Grand is patched together for the next 4 - 6 months (when she will need to have a second surgery)...

And the littler two have quit crying because they are now annoyed at all the attention and gifts their sister is getting...

And I'm really worn out.

But I'm kinda/sorta toying with the idea of telling Mr. Jenny that I would feel a whole let better if he were to bring my breakfast in bed in the morning.

He might actually do it...especially if I promise him I won't make any crumbs!

Ouch that "cute little freckled arm"! I'm so happy that this story didn't have a crummy ending!

Ouch! That looks like it would have hurt a lot.

I think a few crumbs never hurt anyone. Dog dirt in the bed is another matter entirely though.

Hope Mr. Jenny brings you breakfast in bed !

The poor thing. But morphine works great, had it for kidney stones a while back. They could have ripped my kidney out with a harpoon and would have still been laughing

Such a painful mishap for your granddaughter, the photo of the condition of her little arm made me wince. It's good you gave the other two breakfast in bed, they needed loving reassurance too. Once my youngest son had a severe cut on his arm, but it was his older brother that cried the most!

I love all the photos, Matlock! I can't decide which gives me a worse case of the willies - the arm photo or the double jointed photo!

Glad to see Julia looking so happy!

What a wonderful grandma you are to let the girls have breakfast in your bed! I'm glad you've got the crumbs out, now.

I would say you deserved breakfast in bed just for starters! What a week you've had. That picture of her poor arm is unbelievable. Where did she fall from? Glad to hear that her surgery was a success and that she is on the mend. Your grands are just adorable. Hugs, Kat

OOOOOh, that was a tough picture to look at. So sorry for the oldest grand -- looks painful. My grands favorite place is my bed (so they can watch cable) so I always have crumbs. Hope this is a calmer week. Jan

Oh, her poor little freckled arm!!!!! Poor little lady....I hope she is not in any more pain.
I have one of those double jointed kids too. Ouch.
I, unlike you would not allow crumbs in my bed...but I would LOVE breakfast in bed. minus crumbs.

OMGoodness... nothing worse then having a grandchild with an injury! My 2 yr old grandson broke his arm last year and had to have surgery. It was the hardest thing when they took him out of his mothers arms to take him back to the operating room... we both cried our eyes out!! Sure hope you oldest grandlittle gets better soon! =)

(Blecck) I was a medic and I still get grossed out looking at broken limbs. Thank God it wasn't an open/compound fracture (bone through skin.) That poor child. God bless her. Give her a hug for me. You have had a traumatic week. Sending you a hug too! ♥~Ames

Thinking you ALL need breakfast in bed - maybe a cruise or trip to Disneyland!

Having gone through pins & an external fixator (hoping your dear grandlittle doesn't have one of those attached)I I I can totally understand. One positive is that young bones heal well & at a better rate.

Keep that ice maker going - "ice is your friend"

Oh my goodness, that poor little freckled arm - I'll be it had us all wincing! Your lucky grands to have a Grandma who is nearby and understands the healing properties of breakfast in bed. I think that Mr Jenny should be surprising you with breakfast in bed - and if he's worried about crumbs he should, perhaps, make that breakfast in bed in a resort somewhere glamorous!

Oh, my goodness. That arm picture is painful to look at! And 4-6 months in a cast, with a second surgery to boot? That must have been the worst break ever!!

Sorry your shingles kept you out of the hospital. As a fellow g'ma, I feel for you on that one.

Glad to see that she's feeling better, though. And I love all the cute photos you posted.

I'll be praying for rapid healing and a perfect result!

See that photo of her arm, made my stomach turn over! Bless her heart. Glad she is home and young and will eventually be all healed. You, on the other hand, may never completely recover. Breakfast in bed could prove to be quite comforting for Grandma. (Grandpa, too, if he plays his cards right)

Wonderful post!

Oh Jenny... that very same thing happened to MY boy back in February. And his poor unfreckled arm looked JUST like that. This post shows the xrays: http://lifebythecreek.wordpress.com/2011/04/13/8-weeks/. I don't have a photo of his arm because I rushed to school and then in the ambulance to the Childrens Hospital, and my flip phone doesn't have a camera. I didn't go back home again until late the next evening, once surgery was complete, etc. And his follow up surgery to remove the pins is in November. Sounds so very similar, and my stomach STILL churns when I remember seeing my boy hurting like that. The blessed thing is that at 11, they're growing so fast that the bone heals swiftly and well. I know your daughter-in-law SO appreciates having you there to help out... what a blessing. xoxox.. ((((hugs)))) Glad your bed is put back to rights now!

Oh owww ouchie!! That hurts just to look at it. Glad she is all fixed up! Changing sheets is necessary after eating in bed. :-)

Oh my goodness! You had me nearly in tears for a moment. I'm glad to hear she is home now though. Now grandma gets to spoil her a bit, right?

Dapoppins said...

Nobody gave my kids morphine when they broke their arms....of course, their arms didn't look like wet spaghetti noodles either. That might have had something to do with it.

I know she's better now, but I'm sayin a prayer that she heals perfectly and has no problems later!

God Bless.

(Your such a gooood grammy!)
