...especially when they are like this one...
Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground
That song would make you cry, too.
Right?
(sniff, sniff, sniff)
The lady sitting by me at Mo's Kindergarten graduation thought I was funny.
Mr. Jenny thought I was funny.
My daughter-in-law thought I was funny.
But I was sad.
Mo.
My little, serious, lovely little Mo...
...is going to be a first grader.
And if that wasn't bad enough, all the little five year olds had to sing that ridiculously sad song during
the graduation ceremony.
Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
'Til the rain comes tumbling down
Of course I had to cry.
Pulling weeds and pickin' stones
Man is made from dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own
'Cause the time is close at hand
Grain for grain, sun and rain
Find my way in nature's chain
To my body and my brain
To the music from the land*
After the graduates filed out, the lady next to me asked me if I was always so emotional.
She said it nicely when she asked me, so I answered her.
I said, "No. I must be tired."
She just smiled and started to leave.
I touched her arm, and she turned back.
"I lied," I said, "I am always so emotional...but, really, don't you think that's a sad song?"
She just smiled, again, and walked away.
*this song was written by folk singer David Mallett in 1975. It is called "The Garden Song".

Sweet little one:) My Avery graduated Kindergarten last night... they played "Let them be little" before they came in! TEARS:) Have a blessed day, HUGS!
Seriously??? Who wouldn't cry at that song? I am a crier and I finally, (I think), have gotten over the fact that people look at me like I'm crazy! Your granddaughter is lovely, and has a wonderful smile!!!
chris
I think the better question would have been why wasn't she emotional. I would have cried for sure!
Mo is very cute. What a character! Yes, it's a very sad song. It's hard to watch them grow up so fast.
Aw gwammaw...little Mo is going to First Grade. I'm crying with you cause I don't want to think of my little flower going to first grade. sniff sniff. Here's a tissue..oh wait not that one ...it's kinda used. Sorry I guess you'll have to use your sleeve. Love ya, mean it!~Ames
sometimes (I know like a lot the older you get right) but no, REALLY!!!! on the serious side of tears...and we as women have them for happiness and joy and OMGracious so many feelings, that we women own....tears are just the icing on who we are....!!!! MY Jack is already a first grader...and it seems like he was just a babe ...and now I have three other little grand-delights that are leaving the tremendous 2's for the threes and one just turned 4! OMG!!!
Every year the kindergarteners do a program and sing "I may be small now, but just watch me grow". I knew it was coming, because my older one did it then. Still, when my son was singing I was sniffling. And I wanted to stand up and yell "No! Stop growing!" Nothing wrong with a little sentiment...
I don't think i have heard that song before, but the lyrics seem nice. My little nephew is finishing Kindergarten in a few weeks, and i can't believe the time has flown so fast! I'm sure if I get invited to his graduation ceremony, i will be in tears to!
I'm totally with you on this one. I'd have been bawling my eyes out.
Ahhhh..my youngest grandchild starts kindergarten in the fall..
time for a new one, I say! My son doesn't agree with me though...
Jenny, I'm with you! I'm very emotional. I cried last weekend, watching my granddaughter dance.
I just have no words to express how sad that song is---Mwahahahaha!!!
Aww I think that is sweet, songs do that to me to especially if they play them during a sentimental occasion, or a certain time of the month, or on a Tuesday.....
Jenny, she is absolutely adorable! You have such a BLESSED life. <3 And...I would cry too. ;)
We don't have any graduation in our pre-k or kindergarten, we just had a special last school day with games and a special snack, but we still cried our eyes out! I do it every year so do not feel bad! Have a wonderful weekend and I hope as is well with you and your family!
Congratulations to Miss Mo!
She is a cutie.

Precious girl! Why do they have to grow up so quickly?
that's one of the cutest grads I've seen this year!!
Under the circumstances, I suspect that any song would have seemed sad. Don't worry about Ms Emotionless-next-door-seat. We're all different :)
Oh Jenny, I would have been crying right along with you. I cry at my grand's milestones even if they don't sing a sad song. She is such a cutie! laurie
I feel ya, sistah friend!
(I'm always so emotional, too...)
;)
I find I cry a lot easier--possibly since my 40th or 50th birthday. My grandkids make a wet marshmallow of me. The four-year-old especially. It's like I never had a kid of my own. I marvel at how fast they are growing and how quicky time is passing.
Your little sweetie is beautiful and I understand your tears. And, I DO think that song is sad.
Oh Jenny, we have this in common. I cry so easy and always wonder why I'm the only one effected. It's embarrassing sometimes, LOL! What sweet pictures!!
I would have cried too.
Of course, I cry at everything as well. I think our hearts are just bigger than some other people's....it's always full of extra liquidy love.
Congrats to the cutest little 1st grader in Arizona!!!
Why do they have to grow up? Our Kindergarteners had to sing "What a wonderful world". I cried!
I have to go to Justin's preschool graduation next week. I already cried through his spring concert! I try to keep it quiet.
