Pressure in First Grade City

Oh man.

Our poor little Mo has it bad this year.

First grade.

Who knew that all the Kindergarten rests and the juice breaks and the round tables with little friends would evolve into...

GASP!

Spelling tests!?!?

I talked to her on the phone this morning on the way to school.

"Grandma," she said in her squeaky little voice, "I am having a spelling test today."

"Oh, wow!   That's cool, right?"

"Grandma!" she said a little more loudly.  "Did you HEAR me?  I am having a spelling test today."

I thought for a moment.   "Well, that's kind of cool, isn't it?   I  mean, just THINK, you're going to learn to read."

"Grandma!"  she said in a discouraged little voice.  "One of my words is L - E - G!  L - E - G Grandma.  I don't even know what that spells."

"Momo," I tried to be comforting.  "Just sound it out...ellllll ...eheheh... guhguhguh...ellehguh!  LEG!"

She was quiet.

"Mo, are you there?" I inquired.

"I'm here Grandma but I'm gonna be honest.  I think first grade is going to be hard."

Ahhhh...

Ahhhh...

My poor little Grandlittle.  Just trying to get a ellehguh up in first grade.

Sigh...

Yes, I guess that first grade has its challenges! It's good that she has a sympathetic ear in you!

The Allamanda is like the hot pink Mandevilla that's sold in supermarkets and nurseries for the summer. A trumpet flower on a vine, usually supported on a trellis. Thanks for enjoying my work!

Oh dear. Poor little thing. And we thought it was tough sending our own kids to school. Grandkids are just as bad.

Those first few days sometimes are just a bit hard but with a grandma like you sweet little Mo will be doing super in no time. What a lucky little girl she is to have you for a grandma. Hugs

First grade is such a big difference from kindergarten. Tell her, have no fear... that's what spell check is for!

It can be pretty stressful, that's for sure. I hope she does well! I'm so glad, my kids are all adults. I do think it's harder in a way with grand kids though. When my granddaughter struggles with something, it gets to me more...
Great post!

That is adorable and funny and heart breaking all at the same time. Looking on the bright side, though, at least she can spell it, right? poor girl. Here's to first grade survival!

oh the harsh realities of grade 1 ... I remember thinking that my grade 1 teacher was the meanest ever ... could be because i was always talking ....
I'm sure Moe will do just fine ... she has big sisters to guide her ... and a family full of love!

So tough at that age to conquer being in school all day AND having a spelling test! I'm sure she did great! Give her a few months and she will be reading to you.

She is the funniest little thing....and NOT a little bit dramatic either. NOT sure where she gets it from. :)
