My Grandma Always Said... (and winner)

I remember my Grandma had this saying...

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

And that saying has really stuck with me over the years.

But this morning I was totally ready to lay another yard or two of pavement in that downyard direction when Mr. Jenny got out of bed at 5:15!

"OK, five minutes!" he said.

I tried to ignore him but he proceeded to open and close every drawer in his dresser...loudly...and then to brush his teeth...loudly...and then to actually turn the light on...loudly.

"Arrrgggh..." I groaned.

"OK, three minutes!" he said.

I wearily rolled my tired, old body out of bed and started getting dressed.

A few minutes later we were in the car heading for Tempe Town Lake.

A little mecca for many other insane people who think that walking/hiking/biking/rowing is the thing to do for fun and exercise.

And what better time to do those things then at 5:36 am?

Yesterday when we were hiking we made a little promise that for one week we would try walking on the trails there every morning.

No showers, no breakfast, no coffee...

Just us and 250 other people looking for solitude and sweat. ... and actually it was fun!

There was a lovely breeze and the traffic across the lake made a relaxing white noise sound and the sun coming up made the water alive with shades of peach and lemon.

Runners passed us.

Bikers whizzed by.

Scullers on the water made rhythmic music with their oars.

And we walked along, with the sun making dazzling white spots in our eyes in the quiet companionship you get with another crazy person who is willing to go walking with you at 5:36 am!

Now...

I suspect that tomorrow morning at 5:15 am I will have forgotten all this poetic reverie about the whole thing...

But for today...

My Grandma would be proud!

AND

One of you are going to be proud to be the lucky winner of the Stinky giveaway! So, I'm off to ask Mr. Random Org...

Congrats Silke! What a beautiful place to walk! Let me know how it works out this week! I am going back to the gym this week after a 2 week "break" so hopefully wont be to sore!

I was so excited, I totally forgot to comment on your crazy early walking. Good for you!! I get up at the same time, but only to make breakfast and get Daniel out the door. But I since exercised a little - very little... You might just inspire me! :) Silke

I am usually up at 5:30AM, happily at the computer but, oh now, not out on a jogging trail, communing with nature anywhere, not even on my treadmill unless I fall on top of it getting out of bed.

Congratulations to the winner of the little skunk!

I didn't realize that you were in the Valley! I love getting up early here. Especially in the summer when it's the only relatively cool time of day. Wish I lived close enough to Tempe to enjoy the lake that early, but I do walk and run the canals here, and that's almost as good.
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow morning at 5:30!

Good for you! I really don't like being up before 6:00 A.M.. and well if I had it my way I wouldn't be up before 7:00 A.M but I have an alarm clock named Alex who is up at 6:30 every day.

Jenny....good for you and Mr. Jenny....now don't you feel better...LOL...

Good for you two! Way to go! Don't you feel better - now that you're at home with your feet up, drinking coffee?

Congrats to the Silke for her smelly win! I can't remember how I found your blog, but you're on my favorites list that I was scanning this morning. I love Tempe Town Lake, we take our pooches there for the PetSmart walk each year. It does present a lovely backdrop---even to running I guess!!

Congrats to the winner!

I get up that early to work out and it always is a bummer.....but I feel so much better when it's done and then I can not worry about fitting a workout in the rest of the day! :)

What fun for you! But I agree, something about 5:15 on the clock induce fear and pain in the mind. Go you! I am impressed.

Awesome job you two! You both are really working as a team at this, and that my friend will get you a long ways! So tomorrow should the roles be reversed...start the countdown! "5 minutes Mr. Jenny!"

Congrats to Silke! Great gift! Girl, you are brave to do all of that exercising without coffee... not me, can't hardly breathe without coffee in the mornings! Have a wonderful day, dear Jenny! HUGS!

Have your ears been burning? We had an Atlanta blog party on Saturday night and I was sharing your beauty secrets, i.e., RF. We are all wanting to try it!!!

Congrats to Silke on the awesome win!!! I just loved your walking story!!! YOU GO GIRL!!!

Wishing you a wonderful day!!!

Lourie said...

Wow! You go girl! As for me, the only thing that would get me out of bed that early would be the need to pee. haha. I didn't exercise today, but I cleaned out my van. A huge undertaking as it was beginning to look like a city dump.

Beth Zimmerman said...

I gave up and moved. LOL ... turned out you were not alone in your struggles with my wayward blog! Hope you will visit my new one too ... and that it will be more cooperative!

Good for you both. What a great way to start the day. for you.
I have to have my coffee first...but then again, if I did that I would have to pee the entire walk.
Like I said: Good for you both!!!

I am so proud of you gus for getting up and walking. Each day it will get easier and you will enjoy it even more. Okay there will be sometimes you will just want to sleep but you will get up anyway and be glad that you did. I would think/write one positive though each day from your early morning jaunt!

Good luck with those walks. It looks like a great place to be at 5:36 a.m.

I love early morning walks with my puppy. It's so nice and peaceful....then I return back to the reality of screaming and fighting kids, lol.

That is the best way to start the day.

what a great way to start your day, in the land of perpetual sunshine! here on the wetcoast, getting up that early aat this time of year usually means facing a rather grey and blustery morning ... I wish I had your willpower!

Unknown said...

Congratulations to the winner ... and to you for getting your excercise all done so early. I get up that early, but I'm usually mumbling about the joy I'll have when my husband gets a "normal" job so I can sleep, while I'm making the coffee ;) . No exercising for me until at least 6:45 when my niece comes through the front door, then it's chase the baby around all morning aerobics :) .

I love to get up early and love the solitude, just don't want to mix all those nice things about the morning up with something like exercise...afraid that the scale is telling me something different though. Good for you!

Congrats to Silke! And congrats to you, too, Jenny, for finding unexpected delights in what might have appeared to be an onerous task. I imagine that after a few mornings of the same, you will become addicted and start to twitch if you don't get your daily dose of peace and morning solitude. :<)

Ain't it the truth! Getting up in the early morning is downright painful, but once you get out in the glorious sunshine and fresh air you LOVE it!

Jeanie said...

It will help me to feel simpatico with you as I am out walking the dog at 5:30 or 6 every morning. Don't let me down.

Pondside said...

Good for you, Jenny - your grandmother would have been well satisfied with you. I'm trying to get it together to get out once a day - it's hard without someone to go along with you. (that's my excuse, anyway)

paige said...

I'm the same. I hate the getting up part, but once I'm dragged out of the bed against my will and forced to do something, I'm usually happy about it. :)

Terra said...

Ah yes, I was pondering that road Saturday night when I decided to take a jog. Hadn't done that years and years. I ran. I really did. A long way - and I haven't been able to sit on the toilet since - I need a handycap bar to help me down. ARGH.

Good fro you Jenny! That is the way to burn off calories. I;m not a goo early riser either, but once I'm up I feel better.

Good for you beginning your walking program. I can understand about the early morning thing.

However, living where we live, soon you will have to be out there at 3 in the morning for it to be cool enough!!

I actually love the sunrise...maybe it is because it is such a novelty or the few times I have seen, I never went to bed and a fun and crazy night of partying preceded it.

But seriously good for you! My friend and I used to try and go boogie boarding at 6am...we only made it a couple of times..but I felt the same way after it was wonderful, but not wonderful enough to get my up early the next day.
