Saying Goodbye

This post is linked Saturday Centus - A 100 word story based on a prompt. The prompt is in bold below.
*********************************************************************************

I looked at the small, plain wooden box in my hand. It's simplicity appealed to me.

"Are you sure that's the one you want?"

I felt a little lump in my throat as I peered down at my choice, held tightly in my hand. I didn't think this would be so nerve-wracking. Was I making the wrong decision? I couldn't agonize over this any longer.

I took a deep breath before managing to say, "... Yes, it is."

The difficulty of this task really surprised me.

It had only been a few weeks but the attachment that had developed between me and those under my careful care had been astonishing.

"Are you sure this will work?" I asked the pimply-faced clerk at the pet store.

"Yes," he replied with a smirk suspiciously bordering on a laugh plastered on his irritating adolescent face.

"Yes, ma'am. I'm certain four dead chickens will fit in this box for burial."

This little story is linked to the week 9 prompt for Saturday Centus. To see other cool stories just click here!

Great twist, Jenny! I loved your take on this. Personally I don't bury my chicken, I cremate them. Usually with some barbecue sauce.

Burying them... c'mon... you can't waste perfectly good chicken meat. If the heat got 'em, doesn't that just mean less cooking time?

Ok Jenny this has gone just to far I mean now you are offering to bury dead animals that you were going to look after, as we know funerals are an expensive hoby , have you deviated from your original plan .
I get it you will charge a nominal advance to secure your time to animal sit kill them before your needed then whilst odffering sincere condolonces offer to bury them . I guess your husband could go into pet coffins as a side line mm and grandkids could decorate the coffins I can see a lucrative business here go for it .

Oh my gosh...now you have to arrange the burial too???
Wait, was an autopsy performed?

Morbid tale of the day: when my dog choked to death on a piece of chicken drum-let a few years ago, I panicked and put him in "our" favorite Nine West bag and buried him in a shallow grave by the children's playground. When my hubby returned from his business trip a few days later, he had to dig the carcass up, put it in a box, and eventually gave Oscar a proper burial at the animal shelter we volunteer at, sans bag :-(
